FAQ
Got Questions?
No problem — here are answers to the things future guides usually ask me about training, gear, bookings, and getting started. If you’re still wondering about something, just reach out.
Every great expedition starts with a good question!
The question I get asked the most is:
Do you offer RYA Powerboat Level 2 courses?
Not just yet — but it’s in the works! I’m a certified RYA Powerboat Level 2 instructor, but my company Polar Geographic is still in the process of becoming an official RYA Certified Training Centre. Until that’s approved, I don’t offer RYA Level 2 courses.
That said, the Zodiac training I do offer is built specifically for the expedition cruise industry. It gives you hands-on experience with a fully equipped Zodiac MK5, just like the ones used on polar ships — perfect preparation for working in the field.
Want to be notified when RYA is available?
Just send me a quick message or email, and I’ll make sure you’re the first to know once the certification is in place.
What types of training courses do you offer for expedition guides?
We provide hands-on courses including Zodiac driving, polar bear safety, and new guide support.
What About PTGA Assessments?
The Polar Tourism Guides Association (PTGA) is a non-profit organization that provides training and certification for polar guides and field staff, focusing on international standards for adventure tourism.
At this point, I do not offer PTGA assessments as part of my training program. My focus with Polar Geographic is to deliver practical and industry-relevant training using realistic equipment and small-group instruction. The aim is to build confidence and readiness for the conditions guides face in the field — particularly with Zodiacs set up exactly like those on expedition ships.
That said, I completely understand the value of PTGA certification, and many of the skills I teach would naturally support your performance in those assessments.
Can beginners with no prior experience attend your courses?
Absolutely, our courses are designed to support both new and experienced expedition guides.
How large are the training groups?
We keep groups small to ensure personalized coaching and effective learning.

I recently took part in a polar bear safety and rifle handling course with Polar Geographic, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. What set this training apart was the emphasis on practical, hands-on experience. We didn’t just talk about safety—we actively practised it. From learning about flare guns and rifles to shooting 50 live rounds from a range of positions (prone, kneeling, and standing), every part of the day was designed to build real-world skills. The live-fire exercises were especially valuable, and the final test—shooting after sprinting to simulate the adrenaline rush of a real polar bear encounter—made it feel authentic and relevant. I left the course not only more knowledgeable, but genuinely more confident in my ability to respond under pressure. It was an enjoyable and empowering day that I’d recommend to anyone working in polar environments.
