Becoming a polar expedition guide isn’t just a job — it’s a lifestyle. One minute you’re helping guests into a Zodiac in the Arctic drizzle, the next you’re interpreting glacial landscapes or watching whales breach off the bow. It’s exciting, unpredictable, and deeply rewarding.

But how do you get started?

The world of expedition cruising can seem a bit mysterious from the outside. That’s why I started Polar Geographic: to help new guides find their footing and build confidence before they step onboard.

Through hands-on Zodiac training, polar bear safety courses, and one-on-one mentorship, I’ve worked with new guides — each on their own path, but all driven by the same curiosity and love for the wild.

If you’re just starting out, here’s my honest advice:

  • Get trained before you’re hired. The ship is not the place to learn Zodiac driving from scratch.
  • Understand the responsibilities. It’s not just adventure — it’s safety, logistics, guest care, and teamwork.
  • Stay humble, stay hungry. You’ll learn something new on every trip. That’s part of the magic.

This blog (and my whole project) is here to support you — whether you’re dreaming about your first voyage or getting ready to launch your career.
