2. to 4. July 2025 marked a big milestone for me and Polar Geographic: I completed my very first full Zodiac Training course with a student — and what a rewarding experience it was.
Over the course of three intensive days, we covered 16 essential topics that every Zodiac driver should know. From taking a Zodiac off the hook to bow landings with power on, from MOB procedures to troubleshooting engine problems — we went through it all, both in theory and on the water.
The training was hands-on, realistic, and designed to simulate the conditions guides can expect to face on real expedition ships. We worked with our Zodiac MK5, the same model used by many polar operators, giving the student an authentic and professional training environment.
On the final day, the student completed a two-part assessment:
- A practical test on all 16 proficiencies
- A 20-question multiple choice test covering procedures, safety, and best practices
I’m proud to say he passed with confidence and skill.
This course isn’t a formal certification (yet), but participants receive a detailed certificate outlining what they’ve learned and demonstrated. And perhaps more importantly, they walk away better prepared — and more confident — to step into a real expedition guide role.
It’s incredibly fulfilling to share what I’ve learned over the years and to help support new guides getting ready for the field. This first course is just the beginning, and I’m looking forward to welcoming more students in the months ahead.
